Syracuse Mayor Welcomes Local Entrepreneur Turned Philanthropist, Chedy Hampson, to Home HeadQuarters’ 340+ Volunteer Block Blitz on City’s Southside

One-day, rain or shine event provides minor repair and beautification activities at no cost to neighborhood residents and links Southside families with available resources

 

Syracuse, N.Y. – Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh will help local nonprofit housing and community development organization Home HeadQuarters kick off their 16th Annual Neighborhood Block Blitz this Friday, September 15, 2023, at 9am, near the Creek Walk at Hunt and Rockland Avenues. The event, which welcomes more than 340 corporate, school, government and neighborhood volunteers, will also feature an announcement from TCGplayer founder and former CEO Chedy Hampson who grew up near the Block Blitz target area. After kickoff, volunteers will work to make improvements on more than 60 properties in the Elmwood-Creekside neighborhood on Syracuse’s Southside including painting porches, landscaping, tree planting, mural painting and more.

 Block Blitz team, project and resident highlights:

  •  100 Rockland Avenue and 1023 West Colvin receive full makeovers – full exterior paint, repaired porches and one new roof

  • Sherwin Williams is coordinating more than 100 gallons of paint to 50 different addresses

  • Home Depot’s 50-member volunteer team takes over Elmhurst Avenue and works to prep properties for upcoming Home HeadQuarters development

  • Artist and painter, Pat Condon (@pat_the_painter on Instagram), along with a volunteer team from Syracuse University’s School of Visual and Performing Arts (one of three SU teams), will paint a sidewalk mural along a quarter mile of the Creek Walk

  • Just over 240 5-gallon drums of driveway sealer will be delivered, poured and spread by volunteers on 40+ neighborhood driveways

  • Onondaga County’s new Mobile Lead Testing Van will be onsite and open for the public to tour and register for future lead test

  • God’s Temple of Faith Ministries at 1501 South Avenue will have a new sign installed as part of Block Blitz directly after kickoff M&T Bank’s volunteer team, both the presenting sponsor of the event and the team with the longest Block Blitz tenure, will stain almost a full block of fences
